Tourism and the Digital Transformation
Malawi joins the world in celebrating Tourism Month every September with World Tourism Day being held on 27th September. The theme for this year is Tourism and the Digital Transformation and it highlights the need for increased investment in digital technologies to create an environment for innovation and entrepreneurship in tourism.
United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili said in a press release “Harnessing innovation and digital advances provides tourism with opportunities to improve inclusiveness, local community empowerment and efficient resource management, amongst other objectives within the wider sustainable development agenda”.
As part of the celebrations, a series of activities take place to raise awareness of tourism, its actual and potential contribution to sustainable development, and the positive impact that it can bring to culture, conservation and the economy among others.
The Department of Tourism will hold a Regional Workshop on Tourism and Digital Transformation in Mzuzu on 20 September. Among the facilitators of the workshop will be Mzuzu Fashion Week co-founder Wezi Mzumara.
World famous music festival Lake of Stars will also be held in Salima from 28 – 30 September.
