The supply of water to residents of Lilongwe city

The supply of water to residents of Lilongwe city relies heavily on the health of the Dzalanyama Forest Reserve. But it is under threat from illegal loggers and charcoal burners who now resort to violently attacking, sometimes killing, under resourced forestry and community guards.

Headed up the mountains today with @hearttravelandadventures for tree planting in Dzalanyama Forest Reserve. The 10+/- km hike was tough but the beauty and serenity of the miombo forest and streams were pure bliss.

The reserve is an important catchment area for Lilongwe River which supplies water to the capital city. But the reserve is under threat from illegal charcoal burners. The forestry officials try their best but the burners are determined and usually violent.

Dug up from the archives.
So today I decided to work on my blog, something I have been really bad at lately. Was rummaging through my collection of photos and found this one of a young man on a paddle board, hundreds of metres off the shore. There were storm clouds brewing behind us and the boat operators I was with warned him that he would be in serious trouble if the storm found him that far out. But the guy seemed unbothered and casually paddled further out. I guess he had a mission to fulfill 😀
